Connect Your Domain via SFTP/FTP

You build your site with webinice, but you host it with your provider. This guide shows how to buy a domain, grab your SFTP/FTP details, and publish from webinice to your host.

What webinice does (and doesn’t)

  • webinice generates your static website and uploads it to your webspace.
  • webinice does not sell domains, set up hosting, or manage email. You handle those with your hosting provider.

1) Reserve a domain

  1. Pick a host (e.g., IONOS, Strato, Hostinger, all-inkl, Namecheap).
  2. Search your desired domain, add it to the cart, and choose a basic web hosting package (keywords: “shared hosting”, “webspace”).
  3. Turn on “SSL/HTTPS” in the host panel so your domain gets a certificate.

2) Find your SFTP/FTP access

After purchase, your host provides webspace credentials. You need:

  • Host / Server (e.g., s123456.webspace-host.com or your domain)
  • Username
  • Password
  • Protocol: Prefer SFTP (port 22); otherwise FTPS/FTP (usually port 21)
  • Target path: The public folder (commonly htdocs, www, or public_html).

Where to find them?

  • IONOS: “Hosting” → “SFTP & SSH” or “FTP access”; target folder in “Webspace Explorer”, usually htdocs.
  • Strato: “Databases & Webspace” → “SFTP/FTP access”; target folder htdocs.
  • Hostinger: “Hosting” → “Files” → “FTP accounts”; target folder public_html. Tip: If you don’t see SFTP, create a new user and note host, username, password, and path.

3) Add credentials to webinice

  1. Open your site in webinice and choose PublishSFTP/FTP.
  2. Fill in:
    • Host / Server
    • Port (22 for SFTP, 21 for FTP/FTPS)
    • Username and password
    • Target path (e.g., htdocs or public_html)
    • Protocol: choose SFTP if available; otherwise FTPS/FTP.
  3. Save the connection.

4) Upload your site

  1. Click Publish in webinice.
  2. webinice builds your static site and uploads it into the target folder you specified.
  3. Check your domain in the browser. If you just changed DNS, it can take a few minutes up to 24 hours to show.

5) Common hiccups

  • Login fails: Confirm protocol (SFTP vs. FTP/FTPS) and port. Reset the password and try again.
  • Empty folder: Verify the target path (htdocs, www, public_html). Some hosts require a leading /.
  • No HTTPS: Enable SSL in your host panel (Let’s Encrypt or built-in) and republish.
  • Old version showing: Clear browser cache or hard-refresh (Cmd+Shift+R), then recheck.
  • Email/forwarding: Set these up only in your host panel; webinice doesn’t manage email.

Quick checklist

  • Buy domain + webspace at your host.
  • Note SFTP/FTP details: host, username, password, port, target path, protocol.
  • Enter them in webinice under “Publish → SFTP/FTP” and save.
  • Start the upload—done!
